A Turkish exporters’ association is a professional body with public-institution status, organised by sector and product group, that every company exporting goods from Türkiye, or preparing to, must belong to. Membership is not a formality. It is the infrastructure behind your customs declarations, export documents, government incentives and market support programmes.

What is a Turkish exporters’ association and how does the system work?
Türkiye’s exporters’ associations work under the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Trade and are grouped under 26 General Secretariats of Exporters’ Associations. Each general secretariat covers a region and a set of product groups. A textile exporter in İstanbul, for example, joins the relevant association within İTKİB (İstanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters’ Associations), while a machinery exporter registers with the relevant unit of OAİB (Central Anatolian Exporters’ Associations).
Two criteria decide which association an exporter joins: the product’s HS code (GTİP, Customs Tariff Statistical Position) and the province where the company is registered. Apply before both are pinned down and you risk lost time and the wrong membership.
5 steps to membership
Membership applications follow a set sequence. These are the steps to complete it in full:
- Identify the HS code: until the tariff position of the export product is fixed, you cannot tell which association to apply to.
- Choose the association and general secretariat: the HS code and the company’s registered province point to the right one.
- Prepare the documents: the Trade Registry Gazette, signature circular, tax certificate and certificate of activity form the core of the application.
- Apply and pay: pay the annual fee and entry fee set by the association, then complete the online application in the e-birlik system.
- Get your Exporter Identification Number (İKN): once membership is approved, you are assigned the İKN used in customs procedures.
How membership opens the door to incentives
Registration with an exporters’ association is, in practice, a precondition for many government support schemes. Some support is paid out directly through the association, and some is managed by the relevant units of the Ministry of Trade. Either way, active membership is checked when you apply.

The main support and services linked directly to membership are:
- Market research support: the right to apply, under Ministry of Trade coordination, for reports that measure the potential of target markets.
- Overseas trade fair support: part of the cost of exhibiting at fairs is reimbursed; you apply through the association.
- E-commerce and digital marketing support: Ministry of Trade support for the cost of building a digital presence aimed at overseas buyers.
- Buyer delegations and cooperation programmes: overseas buyer meetings and trade missions organised through the association.
- Training and capacity building: sector-specific export training and programmes on international standards and logistics.
The main associations compared by region and sector
Knowing how the general secretariats and their product groups differ is key to joining the right association.
| General secretariat | Region | Leading sectors |
|---|---|---|
| İTKİB | İstanbul | Textiles, apparel, leather |
| İİB | İstanbul | Chemicals, mining, metals |
| OAİB | Ankara / Central Anatolia | Machinery, agriculture, cereals |
| EİB | İzmir / Aegean | Fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, textiles |
| AKİB | Adana / Eastern Mediterranean | Cotton, citrus, food |
| GAİB | Gaziantep / Southeast | Machinery, carpets, plastics |
Common mistakes and what to watch for
Most membership problems come from a handful of mistakes. The biggest is joining the wrong association: a wrong HS code opens membership in the wrong body, and nobody notices until customs declarations fail to clear. The second is losing track of the fee calendar, since members with unpaid fees can have their incentive applications suspended. Finally, some support cannot be claimed retroactively from before your registration date, yet this step, which belongs before your first export, is often left until after it.
